Motiv Designs Interview

Name of your website?

Motiv Designs

Your name?

Jason

Your Location (city, etc)

Pottstown

Please give us a short summary of your website?

My site is a design arts website. I mainly focus on fractal art and including them into wallpapers/backgrounds, and myspace layouts.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I have been into fractals for a long time and wanted to show off some of my designs on my own website.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

I launched my first website about 10 years ago. It was a Counter-Strike clan website for posting clan news.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

I wanted to make a brand. I could not find any other brands called motiv designs.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

I have a nice interface using thickbox to view my images. It makes for a nice smooth look to the viewing of images on the site.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

I would like to have a site that people come to download wallpapers and myspace layouts often. I would also like to sell larger prints of my work and posters as they would look beautiful in a larger format.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

So far it has been fun setting up the new design of my site and I hope that the investment of time pays off in the long run :)

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I would advertise more. I really have no advertising budget right now, so I turn to directories to promote myself besides uploading my pictures to the major art hubs like deviantart and flickr.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

I can pump out new fractal images fairly quickly and making renditions are fairly simple as you start changing some of the variables in the generators. I think that I would be able to keep up with the demand. Also the new CMS I am using allows for very easy addition of new content by type. I have a fancy little form I fill out and voila, new fractal with link for high res version, myspace layouts available for that fractal, and wallpapers. Drupal rocks!

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Nothing in particular. I have been doing a lot of extra research on figuring out ways to implement features through Drupal, but nothing that has given me too big of a headache.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Listing for the keywords I want to on the major search engines.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Directories and social networking and bookmarking sites.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

Well it used to be very difficult for me to add new content as I hand coded my site. Recently I converted to Drupal CMS and my expectations have grown for the site. I now feel that I can do much more as it takes less time to add content and features are endless. I had expected to run a simple html site that I added images to. Now I have a dynamic gallery with a blog and soon to be dynamic video gallery for fractal zoom movies.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

This site has been up for over a year now and I hope to keep it up until I die. It is fairly cheap to maintain and as long as I do not start using too much bandwidth I will be ok.
