What is the name of your Blog?

robinthought: a robinart journal

What is your name?

robin

Where are you from? (include country, state and/or city)

U.S.

Please describe your blog

My blog is an art journal. I post lots of images of new artwork, paintings, photography, video, various web projects in addition to writings on creativity, inspiration, and basically, the life of an artist.

Describe the main purpose of your blogging, what are you trying to accomplish?

I've been online for a while now and my journal is just an extension of that. My intent is just to record my life and the whole process of creating artwork. My grandmother was a writer and diarist and I really appreciate reading that sort of stuff now.

What blogging platform do you do and why?

I will be migrating to wordpress soon because I like opensource and I like the wordpress community. However, I currently use expression engine (p machine). I started out with a html news page and then used greymatter and then movable type and finally expression engine. Expression engine is good, but expensive.

What do you blog the most about?

New works. When I was sick a couple of years ago, I mostly blogged about being sick. Now I mostly stick to new artwork, new projects. It's a way for my family, friends, and art supporters to keep up with me.

What kind of blogs make you angry?

Well, I don't read the ones that make me angry. ;-) I only read just a select group of blogs -- mostly fellow artists, technology news, friends, etc.

Give five of your best blogging tips.

1. If you are going to blog, blog. If you can't keep up with it, just kill it. 2. Spellcheck. Please. 3. Proofread. Please. 4. Post as draft any blog posts which might be of questionable content, so that you can review before it goes live. 5. Regardless if you post under a pseudonym, you can be found. Don't write stuff that you wouldn't want your mother/father/special kin/supervisor to read.

What are some things you would NEVER blog about?

Personal/Relationship issues Money/financial issues

My blog has been public for a while and everyone that I know, knows about it (and sometimes reads it).

Did you start blogging for the purpose of making money and if so, are you making enough money?

No, money was/has never been a part of it.

How long have you been blogging?

My actual blog entries start around the end of 2000; however, I REALLY started blogging in 2003.

About how many hours per day do you spend blogging?

I try to post 3-4 entries per week: a photo on friday + 2-3 entries scattered throughout the week. However, I've been kind of swamped lately, so it's been around 2 a week.

Do you track RSS feeds and if so, how many do you usually track daily?

a few; maybe 4 or 5

Do you use Digg, and why or why not?

I use pageflakes and del.icio.us

Do you use Stumbleupon, and why or why not?

I used to but not so much anymore.

What promotional techniques work best for you and why?

word of mouth mostly. There are so many artists on the 'net these days, it's just hard to even stand out. So, I really don't try to compete in that venue.

If you could post a blog on any blog in the world, which one would it be and why?

I hadn't really thought about it, but some of the bigger ones: slashdot, google, etc.

What mistakes have you made that you could warn others about?

backup, backup, backup. I once forgot to make a backup before I upgraded software and had to contact my hosting co. for help.

Also, before you migrate to a new blog software, make sure that migration of your posts/categories/etc. really IS easy.

What are your top five blogging site picks and why?

Well, it depends. I have several artists that I follow which are linked on my site.
